Use of your personal information

The Office of the Ombudsman uses personal information provided by citizens for the following purposes:

  • Assessing complaints;
  • Initiating investigations;
  • Reviewing evidence;
  • Producing the Ombudsman's findings and recommendations; and,
  • Assessing feedback on the performance of the Ombudsman's office and its staff.

Collection and use of personal information is in accordance with the federal Privacy Act.

Once the Ombudsman's investigations have concluded, complaint files are retained for a maximum of two years. Under the provisions of the Privacy Act, you have the right to the protection of and access to your personal information and to request that changes be made to that information.

Instructions for obtaining your personal information are outlined in the federal government publication entitled Info Source. Personal information requests will be processed by the Office of the Ombudsman's Privacy Coordinator. All requests must be made in writing to:
